Background and Introduction to the Sonoma County Salmonid Coalition

The Sonoma County Salmon Coalition was started in 2005 as largely a land-owner, agriculturally driven effort that includes participation and observation from a broad spectrum of individuals and perspectives. The Coalition was formed to protect and enhance existing habitat, to restore historic habitat; to promote recovery and maintenance of salmonid fish populations; and to create sustainable partnerships that identify and promote regional water enhancement programs while balancing the need to provide for regional economic viability and regulatory certainty. If determined appropriate by the technical advisors and agencies, regulatory certainty will include an adaptive management process that will assess and respond to the changing needs and health of the resources the Coalition seeks to protect.

Members, Cooperating NGOs and Technical Advisors (collectively called Participants) believe that by working together as partners, collective decisions can be made to maximize positive conservation outcomes and provide regulatory certainty. Collaboration is crucial as over 90 percent of the uplands and riparian zones within Alexander, Dry Creek and Knights Valley(s) are privately owned. The Coalition is committed to the protection of salmonids and the regional water supply. Any entity supporting the goals of the Coalition may become a Participant.
